The Tale of Chambers & Nettleton
Once Upon A Time (we’re going back a few years now) in a land Far Far Away (County Durham) a tall bossy lady singer met a shorter out of work actress at a medieval banquet and they decided to work together.
They came to London (for it had worked for Vic and Bob) and began their quest to become a female comedy double act worthy of endless comparison to French and Saunders (they being the only female double act that had a big television show).
Arriving in London and being neither rich nor successful, the girls realised that to begin with they would have to find other ways to pay the rent, which they did together, in a more realistic version of a Morecambe and Wise sketch.
The tall bossy one was called Lynn and she was very clever and not only a singer but had also been a successful business lady with something called a ‘proper job’. Sally, the smaller one who was an actress and not out of work but 'resting', had many talents, most of them hidden, but she was brilliant at creating characters and her ability to find a space was remarkable (she learnt that at drama school). Unlike Lynn, Sally had never had a 'proper job', she was a little afraid of photocopiers and rubbish at typing, so Lynn took her under her wing and together they faked a CV for Sally so that they could both work as temps and keep the big bad wolf from the door.
Their comedy quest began in the small clubs in tiny rooms above pubs that make up the comedy circuit. People would flock for miles to see the strange sight of two women telling jokes on stage (or in front of the fireplace if the pub room was particularly 'compact'). Of course there have always been single female stand ups, and they are what is known as a ‘novelty’ - two women are what is known as ‘taking the piss’! Not everyone is ready for comedy renegades.
And so it was that time passed and the gigs got bigger and bigger and our comedy pair travelled far and wide across the world. Sometimes the audiences were feisty and sometimes, most of the time, they were full of fun and good humour much like Lynn and Sally.
Now, along with telling jokes Chambers & Nettleton are appearing in their own radio show, writing scripts, acting, singing, pod-casting and generally living happily every after...
